As I write this, there is currently an ever-increasing amount of global media outlets publishing some very crappy photos of Kate Middleton topless in France, on her hols with hubby William. The British Royal family are in the process of suing a French paper that first published the pics, citing 'gross invasion of privacy' etc... Magazine editors (at least, everywhere except the UK) are justifying publishing them by saying "the public have a right to know" and "besides which, they are plastered all over the internet so why can't we plaster them all over the newsstands?"
So.. here's my 2 cent's worth... First of all.... we have a right to know? A right to know what? That she has boobs? Oh woopy doo.. I'll sleep much better knowing that now.. Secondly, the villa at which they stayed is far from private, being visible from a public road and surrounding land; if you go putting a pool on a roof that is visible from a road, you can't tell me you "didn't think anyone would see", especially the paps with their lenses.. Thirdly, just cos something's on the internet does that mean it HAS to be put onto paper? Good old media, trying to deflect any responsibilty...
..and fourth... what if that long lens had instead been a sniper's rifle scope? Would there be such an outcry over some blurry images of a future king's wife's norks if we were now mourning their assassinations ?
Me? I'm not a royalist. Couldn't give a monkeys. But I guess if the alternative was a President as opposed to an unelected leader, then we'd be no better off than we are now, as there is a growing apathy towards politicians and their lies anyway - what difference does it make if we have a president or a prime minister.. they'll both be loved by some and hated by the others.
I'm all for the 'public right to know', but this current nonsense is all because of who she is, and let's face it with those images on the cover of magazines, it's all about sales, and sales = money.. and you know what they say.. sex sells. Still, at least it's one thing... err, or two... that can't be withheld under that all-encompassing bullshit umbrella called "National Security" !
Don't know what the American equivalent would be.. maybe if Michelle Obama was photographed naked on a yacht in a marina. I dare say the media would be falling over themselves to get those shots. Would the same line be trotted out again? The public have a right to know? But would the American public then look at her (or her hubby?) in a totally different light? Or would they. like me, just shrug their shoulders and be apathetic to it all? Much ado about nothing methinks!
There.. that's got that my chest
